The Derrick Hand Position is a mid-level position at Cyclone Drilling.  Generally, employees will start as a Floor Hand and work their way up through Motor Hand and on to Derrick hand, however Cyclone will hire experienced outside Derrick hands as positions come open.

 Qualifications

    ​Required
·         High School Diploma or GED
·         6+ months experience as a Derrick hand on a Large Oil and Gas drilling rig
·         Effective written and verbal communications
·         US Citizen or Green Card holder
    ​Preferred
·         2+ years experience on a large oil and gas drilling rig
·         Safeland USA Training
·         History of employment showing long commitment to each employer



Responsibilities

The Derrick hand works under the direct supervision of the Driller.  The work station is in the derrick while drill pipe is being hoisted or lowered in the hole.  He/she attaches the elevators to the stands of drill pipe while the pipe is being lowered into the hole and attaches the elevators and racks the pipe while the pipe is being hoisted our of the hole.  Both operations involve the use of arms and upper body to hold or pull pipe.  The operation could be repeated as many as 80 to 100 times during a 12 hour shift.  He/she is responsible for greasing and inspecting the crown and all sheaves in the derrick. 

The Derrickhand is also responsible for mixing chemicals.  Lifting and carrying between 20 to 100 pounds is required.  Lifting the materials from floor level to levels between 36 and 42 inches high may be required.  He/she is responsible for watching the mud pits for an increase/decrease of mud volume, mud weight, and changes in funnel viscosity and gas cut mud.  He/she must also watch and listen to the mud pumps to know when there is a problem
 
Duties Include:
  1. Maintain and service all mud pumps and circulating system
  2. Maintain and operate all mud handling equipment and work with Motorman on all related engines
  3. Maintain and test mud system as required. Record mud test data and material used on tour report
  4. Responsible for all overhead equipment – both operating and safety
  5. Must be able to also perform Floorhand job duties when needed which include:
    1. Making connections while drilling and tripping
    2. Changing bits
    3. Cleaning and performing maintenance work on the drilling rig
    4. Assist in rigging down, moving and rigging up all parts of the rig
    5. Miscellaneous tasks such as mixing mud, digging ditches and location cleanup
 
Requirements Include:
  1. Must be physically and mentally capable of working at various heights up to 170 feet
  2. Must be in good health and physical conditions; job duties are often physically strenuous
  3. Must be capable of directing other crew members in performing duties to assist Driller
  4. Must have some degree of mechanical aptitude and be capable of learning and performing job duties and be able to keep up with the rest of the crew
  5. Must be capable of assuming responsibilities and maintaining good working relationships with co-workers
  6. Must perform each operation in the safety manner possible as well as complying with all safety and health standards, rules, regulations and orders for the prevention of accidents
  7. The employee is responsible for his/her own transportation to and from the work site and is expected to be on time.
 
Physical Requirements Include:
  1. Must be able to stand for 10 to 12 hours and walk for about 3 hours throughout the workday
  2. Must be able to lift/carry between 10 to 50 pounds frequently with occasional lifting of 20 to 100 pounds throughout the workday
  3. Must be able to kneel, reach and bend rarely during the day as well as frequently working at heights throughout the workday
Must be able to grasp occasionally during the day and frequently push and pull objects throughout the workday
